Resident doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) called off their strike on Saturday. They were demanding an immediate suspension of a senior doctor accused of slapping a junior doctor.
“We request the director to keep Monday as a working day so that surgeries which had been canceled due to the strike can be carried out. We residents are feeling sorry for whatever happened so we want to compensate in every possible way,” the resident doctors wrote in the letter.
The accused doctor, Chief of Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, has been replaced by Dr. Pradeep Sharma till the inquiry is completed.
Earlier, even though the AIIMS in a statement on Friday said that the professor had tendered a written apology, the protesters had said that they would continue the strike till the professor is suspended
“The professor has apologized only for one incident. However, there are many other complaints against him. We demand his removal as the chief of the department. Until he is suspended, we will continue the strike” said Harjit Bhatti, president of the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA).
As healthcare services at the institute remained affected, the hospital authorities had in an order said, “OPD services will function on restricted basis till such a time that normalcy is restored”
